Weed Control - Domestic

The term ‘weed’ describes an aggressive, invasive, easily dispersed nuisance plant, one which commonly grows in cultivated ground to the detriment of other flora or crops

 General Weeds, Docks and Thistles

There are many weeds found in the UK. Most of them are small native plants that can easily be dealt with to keep under control and harbour no particular threat. In fact some weeds play an important part in the eco system, as contributors to the biodiversity and food web, when left to grow on wasteland and thoroughfares.

However, at times the weeds can grow in places that are not always appropriate. Domestic driveways and pathways often become 'littered' with weeds. Pulling the weeds can be labourious and very time consuming. Cutting the weeds is not effective as the root is left in the ground to re-grow. Spraying the weeds with a herbicide is a quick effective method of killing the plant to the root, thus eradicationg the weed growth permanently.

Invasive and Injurious Weeds

Some weeds found in the UK are non native. Plants such as Giant Hogweed and Japanese Knot weed are non native species. Japanese Knotweed was introduced to Britain in the 1850's as an ornamental plant. It is now the most invasive plant in the UK, and has now spread uncontrollably through the UK and Europe. These non native weeds are 'super-species', and play no part in contributing to the eco system. Neither are they affected by the other plants and wild life found in the UK.

Often these plants are not easily identifiable until they are too large and overgrown to manage. By this stage, the efforts and work to remove the plant will be extensively more than the average person can manage. It is not uncommon for some plants, for example Giant Hogweed, to grow 7ft high, with the roots of Japanese Knot weed growing 7ft down into the ground, it not easy for the average person to remove the plants. If left to grow naturally Weeds such as Giant Hogweed and Japanese Hogweed can grow to enormous proportions and even cause damage to buildings, pathways, and driveways.

If you suspect an invasive weed, contact us for an immediate response, we will determine the species and provide a no obligation quote for removing and controlling the weed.
