Fly Control - Domestic

Finding cluster flies can be upsetting and intimidating as they gather in large numbers

Usually domestic households find flies are generally only a nuisance during summer months, with doors and windows left open, one or two flies gain access into the house. Generally speaking these domestic fly problems can be controlled by using fly control sprays and sticky traps.

However when you come to Cluster Flies (Pollenia rudis) the problem is altogether a very different one.

Cluster Fly Problems

Cluster flies can live outside during summer months without much notice, however the flies generally begin to gather within the loft or attic of the house when temperatures outside drop. They can gather in many thousands, which is where they have gained the name 'Cluster Flies'.

Cluster flies will spend the winter months in the roof space of a house. The flies will then try to leave in the early spring.

They are attracted by the light and will often be found in huge numbers around window frames.

Disturbing the hibernation of cluster flies, or finding them ready to leave for spring can be upsetting and intimidating due to the large numbers that form. However it should be noted that they are not considered vectors of diseases or a risk to Public Health.

The Solution to Cluster Fly Problems

Generally they are treated by the use of space sprays or smoke generators supported by non toxic Pulse Units which remain in the attic emitting a knockdown chemical.

Cluster Flies are notoriously difficult to completely eradicate, but with the correct treatment and effective control programme, the problem can be drastically reduced and controlled.
