Bird Control - Warehouses

Warehouses and other industrial buildings are a common place to find nesting birds, including unwanted birds such as Gulls and Pigeons. The areas are often attractive to the birds due to the available food sources and nesting sites
Once these birds have habituated, they can cause expensive damage to buildings and become a nuisance to personnel and general public
Controlling Gulls - A Public Nuisance
- Gulls can become very aggressive in breeding season. They will attack passers by in a bid to protect their nesting site or chicks.
- Bird droppings present a serious Health and Safety risk from diseases spread via the droppings or from potential accidents from slipping on wet guano on walk way and paths.
- Controlling Gulls can be difficult if the correct techniques are not used, as they can behave persistently. They are noisy, sending calls to one and other, and walking up and down buildings
Associated Problems- Cleaning Costs
Bird Guano causes permanent damage to buildings, steel work and masonry if not cleaned off regularly
- Car parks and other areas are stained with mess from bird droppings
There are options of control nuisance birds available
Often prevention is better than cure. There are steps that can be taken to make the area un-appealing to scavengers in hope of deterring pigeons and gulls from roosting and nesting on and around buildings.
Damage to Buildings

Gulls are opportunist scavengers. Cover all rubbish skips and make sure dustbins have lids on. Clean up all food spillages Deter the gulls from finding nesting sites on the building. Removing nests is not often successful as gulls in particular are very persistent and will rebuild a nest very quickly.
Proofing
Nuisance birds can be deterred by making the building un-inhabitable and in-accessible to the birds. This is called Bird Proofing. Using nets, spikes and other systems, professionally installed can prevent any nests being built and can prevent birds from roosting on or entering the building. This option is a long term solution and will prevent costly damage to buildings from nuisance birds, providing the correct system is installed. Incorrect proofing will not be effective and birds will gain access easily. In-fact some birds will use unsuitable spikes and nets to nest on!
Birds of Prey
For sites with a persistent bird control problem the presence of a predator will have the desired effect of deterring pest birds from roosting, nesting or feeding in an area. If a Bird of Prey is flown as a detterent in a scheduled manner of visits a residence is assumed by the prey species, being gulls and pigeonsand corvids. Usually, depending on the extent of the bird problem, an intensive period of visits will be required to start the programme. Numbers of visits can then eventually be lowered.
Egg Oiling
An option of control for birds already residing in the area is to reduce the numbers of successful hatchings during breeding season. This is a technique called Egg Oiling. Egg Oiling is 100% successful in preventing eggs from hatching if carried out correctly by a professional. However it is not suitable for all situations or species.
With all of the options available it is important to deploy the correct method of controlling bird populations , according to each unique situation.
