Bird Control - Transfer Stations

Due to the continual flow of waste, Transfer Stations regularly attract vermin pests including scavenging birds such as Seagulls, Pigeon and Corvids. The birds are attracted by the food source and urban roosting environment.

However, with many Transfer Stations situated in built up areas and with high numbers of scavenging birds present, a number of Health and Safety risks are posed.

Large flocks of birds create vast built up deposits of thier droppings. Large and concentrated areas of ‘guano' may harbour mico-organisms which can lead to human diseases. This makes the areas hazardous to personnel involved.

To name just a few, some of the diseases which can be spread to humans include Cryptococcosis, Salmonellosis (Salmonella Infection) and Psittacosis.

There is also the problem associated with ‘guano' (bird droppings) having a detrimental effect on buildings, machinery and machinery. Bird droppings contain erosive acids that eat away at masonry and steel work leaving permanent damage. The staining of bird guano is also very difficult to remove.
